Ipe by its very nature is a tropical hardwood. Eximcorp deals in this wood product in a restricted way in limited quantities where the exporting saw mill demonstrates that the wood in question has been obtained from legal sources and forests managed sustainably under the control of the governments of the areas and also where the wood is grown and harvested in a manner that preserves the bio-diversity of the forests and habitats around the world. As a result, the Ipe decking wood offered by us may not be as matured as other Ipe decking commonly available in the market places from non-sustainable forestry of natural forests. |

Terminator IPE Decking Wood
Ipe is a tropical hardwood, commonly grows in tropical South-central America, in a wide variety of sites, in marshes and riverbanks as well as ridge tops. Ipe trees grow up to 40-50 Meter in height with trunk diameter of up to 2 Meter. It is one of the tallest trees of the Amazon region. IPE belongs to Lapacho (Bignoniaceae) group and Tabebuia spp. It has many regional names such as Ipe Brazil, Amapa, cortex, Guayacan, Flor Amarillo, Greenheart, Madera negra, Tahuari, Lapacho negro and in common parlance it is also known as Ironwood, Pau Lope & Brazilian Walnut.
Some of these trade names for Ipe lumber include not only Ipe wood, but also a number of other similar species like Cumaru (Dipterix odorata) and Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata). "Ipe lumber" can be used in somewhat of a more generic fashion, rather than a singular biological description. Ipe wood is often clustered with other woods that share similar characteristics.
In appearance, its heartwood varies between olives brown to brown and sometimes with a greenish tinge, often with lighter or darker striping. Ipe wood comes in good long lengths with limited warp. Ipe Texture is fine to medium, grain straight to irregular
Sapwood is much lighter white or yellow usually removed at the mill, although small strips along the edge can be present. Ipe hardwood has no distinctive odor or taste.
Ipe is universally recognised as one of the hardest, strongest and durable timber species in the world. Because of its high density it also has a high fire resistance rating close to Steel and concrete. Experience has shown that Ipe remains stable in the exterior conditions and accordingly, it is most favoured wood for decking and other outdoor structures where strength, stability and durability are important consideration in selection of wood.
Ipe wood products contain no added harmful chemicals so it can be used near water without potential contamination. However, its dust can cause a number of respiratory and contact dermatitis allergic reactions in humans.
Ipe’s weight varies between 950 to 1150 kg per Cubic Meter in air dried condition.
Ipe sawn planks are reported to air dry rapidly in tropical conditions, and can show some checking particularly, if dried quickly in full sun. This can cause warping, especially powerful in large size planks that can actually pull fixing screws. Sealing Ipe end cuts to limit end checking associated with drying is highly recommended.
Being one of the hardest wood, Ipe lumber is somewhat difficult to work with, especially with hand tools. It is recommended that pre-drill holes are made before fixing any screws or nails, and that tools are kept sharp edged with spare drill bits handy. Ipe planks do not bend well, but the wood finishes and sands quite smoothly, with no splintering.
Heartwood of Ipe is very resistant to attack by decay fungi and termites, but not resistant to marine borers; it has the durability and strength of teak, for a lot less investment of money. It is considered to be highly resistant to attack by decay, fungi and termites in the ordinary course of usage.
Ipe wood is very dense, and thus extremely difficult to treat with preservatives
Its appearance changes under exposure to UV sun rays. Normal weathering effect changes its color to light gray. However, such changes are generally reversible with a power wash. Experiences show that protective coatings of Water borne PU applied on a regular periodical basis, though difficult is, protects Ipe’s original colour.
Terminator Ipe Decking Wood
At Eximcorp, we offer you select Terminator Ipe Decking Wood, distinct from generic ‘Ipe Decking Wood ’ commonly available in the market to-day. A mere “Ipe Decking Wood ” commonly available in the market today is no guarantee to quality and consistency in the product.
Terminator Ipe Decking offered by Eximcorp is the Premium, highest grade available in the market today, each piece is hand selected to minimally one face and two edges clean and bright, clear of any weathering, milling, structural or appearance defects including discoloration from water or sticker marks. This exceeds the FEQ (first European quality) - the highest grade available from the producers to-day without third party inspection. However, in the process of hand selection, we often eliminate as much as 30% product to ensure that what is available as our Premium Grade is indeed Premium on all counts. The falling down grades will obviously have minor defects including skip, tear out, knots, sapwood and wormholes on both faces. Such falling downgrades may contain sticker marks or water stain. In applications where aim is durability and not beauty, this grade is highly recommended as cost effective and practical solution.
The most common dimension of Ipe decking is 21mm x 145mm in lengths 90 Cm and up to 6 Mtrs. Prior arrangement is necessary for any other range or dimensions.
